It doesn’t mather if you are building campervan by converting a van, or renovating your RV. The million dollar question remains:ย should you go lithium or stick with the old faithful AGM batteries?
Both have their place, but the choice really depends on how you travel, how long you want to stay off the grid and what gear you want to run.

When we built our first campervan, choosing a leisure battery felt surprisingly difficult.
Every Facebook group seemed to have a different opinion. Some people swore by AGM batteries because they were “tried and tested”. Others claimed lithium batteries were the only sensible option and that AGM was already outdated. And not to forget, the price difference between them.
The problem was that much of the advice was based on information that was several years old. Back then, lithium batteries were pretty โnewโ on the marked and therefor often two or even three times more expensive than AGM batteries. The battery technology and safty has improved a lot and many of the old arguments for AGM simply don’t carry the same weight anymore. At least not for us. That doesn’t mean AGM batteries are useless. They still have a place in certain builds. But for most campervan owners in 2026, the answer is much clearer than it used to be.

Why Your Leisure Battery Matters More Than You Think

When people start planning their campervan to build their electrical system, they often focus on solar panels first. And we did the same, solar panels are visible. They’re there for exciting. They’re easy to show off in photos and everybody on Instagram has them.
But itโs easy to forget that itโs your battery is actually the heart of the entire electrical system. Without enough usable battery capacity, it doesn’t matter how many solar panels you install. Eventually the sun goes down, clouds roll in or you spend a few days with rain.
That’s when your battery becomes the difference between enjoying your trip and constantly worrying about power. A good leisure battery allows you to charge phones, run lights, power a fridge, use a diesel heater and stay off-grid for longer periods without stress.

What Is The Difference Between AGM and Lithium Batteries?
At first glance, AGM and lithium batteries seem very similar.
- Both store energy.
- Both connect to your campervan electrical system.
- Both can be charged using solar panels, DC-DC chargers and mains chargers.
The difference is how efficiently they do those jobs.
AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery. They’ve been used for decades and have built a reputation for being reliable and relatively affordable. Lithium batteries, usually LiFePO4 batteries in campervans, are much newer. They offer higher usable capacity, lower weight, faster charging and significantly longer lifespans.
If you only compare sticker prices, AGM often looks attractive. If you compare what you actually get over ten years of ownership, lithium usually wins.


Battery Weight and Size:
Weight is a massive deal, every kilo counts. AGM batteries weight roughly twice as much as a lithium battery, and lithium takes at the same time up less space. For instance, you may find a 12V 300Ah AGM battery sits around the 70kg. At the same time a 12V 300Ah Lithium battery may be closer to the 30-35kg range.
Not only does it give you more payload for gear, water and passengers, but it’s also much easier to install. Anyone who has tried lifting a large AGM battery into a tight battery compartment will know exactly what I’m talking about.
So if youโre trying to keep under your caravanโs payload limit, lithium frees up weight for more important things, like beer, fishing gear, or that portable aircon.

Looking purely at specifications, lithium wins almost every category.
The only areas where AGM still has an advantage are lower upfront cost and slightly simpler cold-weather operation. But remember: lithium lasts more life-cycles and gives you nearly double the usable energy. Over the lifespan, lithium usually ends upย cheaper per cycle. For everything else, lithium is generally ahead.
The Biggest Difference: Usable Capacity
This is the part many first-time builders miss. A 100Ah AGM battery is not really a 100Ah battery. This is where lithium really shines. With AGM batteries shouldn’t regularly be discharged below 50% of the batteryโs rated capacity. Go lower and youโll shortsen the batteris lifetime. That means your usable capacity is actually closer to 50Ah.
A 100Ah lithium battery can comfortably provide 80-100Ah of usable energy without significantly affecting lifespan. But as always, read your batteries guide to determine the best range.
In practical terms:
This was one of the biggest surprises when we started comparing systems properly. Many builders think AGM is cheaper because the battery itself costs less. But once you account for usable capacity, the numbers start looking very different.

Charging Speed:
While traveling no one wants to waste half a day waiting for batteries to top up. Lithium batteries accept charge much quicker, especially from solar. Especially when you are in a hurry and have a limited amount of sunlight.
Lithium: Can take full amps right up until nearly full, meaning faster recovery.
AGM: Slower to recharge, especially after 80% full.
Which Battery Is Best For Weekend Trips?

- Youโre on a budget and want to build a cheaper van.
- You only camp a few weekends a year.
