Our Renault Trafic was built for two people, and even then almost every centimetre needed a clear purpose. The bed had to be comfortable, our luggage needed a proper home and the van still had to remain easy to drive and park.
It is therefore easy to underestimate how much changes when a campervan needs to work for four. Two extra people do not simply mean adding two more beds. You also need safe travel seats, more storage, more food and water, and enough payload for the people and everything travelling with them.
A family with two young children can travel happily in a relatively compact campervan, especially on shorter summer trips. Four adults, or two adults travelling with teenagers, will usually need more space and a layout that does not require the whole van to be rebuilt every evening.

Four berths do not automatically mean four travel seats
This is the most important distinction in the whole article.
A campervan can have four sleeping berths but only two suitable or registered travel seats. A homemade bench does not automatically become a safe passenger seat because somebody can sit on it, and a seat belt should not simply be attached to ordinary timber furniture.
GOV.UK guidance advises that passengers are safest in forward or rearward-facing seats with suitable seat belts. Seat belt anchorages must be capable of handling the high forces created during an impact, which is why the guidance strongly recommends professional installation by qualified people.

- the direction each seat faces
- what type of seat belts are installed
- whether the insurer accepts the seating arrangement

The government guidance is general rather than a substitute for a vehicle-specific assessment, and it notes that current legislative requirements should be checked when there is any uncertainty.
Travel seats and belt anchorages are considerably harder to add later than another cupboard. They should therefore shape the layout from the beginning.
Check whether your child seats actually fit
In the UK, children must normally use a suitable child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first. Child restraints must not be fitted to side-facing seats. Check the latest UK child car seat rules before travelling or modifying the vehicle.
Do not only measure the width of the rear bench. Test the actual child seats you intend to use and check that:
- The children can be placed in and removed from the seats
- Furniture does not obstruct the seat or belt
- The seats remain usable with the table and beds stored for travel

- The seat belt or ISOFIX mounting is suitable
- Front-seat adjustment is not blocked
A layout that technically includes four seats may still be impractical if two bulky child seats leave no usable aisle or prevent the cab seats from moving.

The number four does not tell the whole story. Young children need smaller beds than adults, but they may also bring child seats, a pushchair, toys and equipment that must remain easy to reach.
A compact setup can work extremely well for a family that mainly travels during summer and uses the outdoors as its living room. The same vehicle may feel very cramped for four adults during a long European road trip.
Think about how long you expect to keep the conversion. A short child’s bunk may be perfect today but unusable in two years. Leaving some additional length in the bed can be more valuable than maximising a kitchen cabinet that was already large enough.

How large should a four-person campervan be?

Three campervan layouts that work for four people
There are many possible floor plans, but most practical family conversions use one of three basic arrangements.
Fixed double bed with bunk beds
A permanent double bed is normally placed at the rear, with two narrower bunk beds fitted along one side or across the back of the van.
This works particularly well for two adults and two children. Everyone has a defined sleeping place and the family does not need to rebuild the dinette every night. The arrangement usually requires a larger panel van, but it makes the evening routine much simpler.
Plan the children’s bunks around their future height rather than their measurements today. Also consider ventilation, guard rails and whether each child can enter and leave the bunk without climbing over somebody else.

Pop-top bed with a second bed inside the van
A pop-top roof can provide two extra beds without taking away the main floor area. The other two travellers sleep on a fixed or convertible bed inside the vehicle.
For many families, this is the most effective way to make a medium van sleep four people. You retain a more manageable vehicle while separating the sleeping area over two levels.
The upper sleeping space is more exposed to cold, wind and outside noise, so it is usually best suited to spring, summer and early autumn. Regular winter use demands more thought around insulation, heating and condensation.

- Less suitable for: Frequent winter travel or people who need a very quiet and insulated sleeping area.

Fixed double bed with a convertible
The adults use a permanent bed, while the dining area converts into a second double bed or two smaller sleeping spaces. The main advantage is a proper area where all four people can sit during the day. The disadvantage is that the dinette must be converted every evening and restored every morning.
Test the whole routine before committing to the layout. Think about where the cushions, mattress topper, duvets and pillows will be stored while the dinette is in use. A conversion that takes five minutes in an empty workshop can feel much slower when everyone is tired and the van is full of luggage.
Best for: Families that value a large indoor seating area.
Less suitable for: Travellers who want to go straight to bed after a long driving day.

Design the beds for the people who will use them
A bed that looks long enough on a drawing can lose several centimetres once the insulation, wall lining and bed frame are installed. Always work with the van’s finished internal measurements.
For adults, the person’s height plus approximately 5 to 10 centimetres is a useful starting point for bed length. Children’s bunks should include room for growth when the conversion is expected to last several years.

Storage for four needs to be easy to understand
Four people bring more clothes, shoes, towels, bedding, food and chargers. A family may also need space for child seats, toys, a pushchair or outdoor equipment.
Storage becomes easier when each person has a clearly assigned drawer, shelf, bag or box. STACKABLE STORAGE BOXES can work well beneath a fixed bed, provided they can be removed without unloading everything placed in front of them.

What we would choose
For two adults and two young children taking mainly weekend and summer trips, we would compare a medium van with a pop-top against a larger panel van. The smaller vehicle would be tempting because it is easier to drive and park, but only if the travel seats, child seats and sleeping arrangements worked without too much daily conversion.
For longer journeys, older children or regular travel during colder months, we would probably choose a large high-roof van with permanent beds and clearly divided personal storage.
For four adults, we would not buy anything before renting and testing a similar layout. It is usually possible to draw four beds inside a van, but that does not mean the resulting vehicle will be pleasant to live in.
We would also keep the first build relatively simple. The kitchen and technical systems can be improved later, but travel seats, bed dimensions and payload need to be right from the beginning because they are much harder to change.
