Step 1: Plan your campervan roof layout

Do not start by drilling holes in your campervan, insetad start with the roof.

Roof space disappears faster than you expect. A roof vent, skylight, roof rack, antenna, awning bracket or storage box can all affect where your solar panel should go.

Place the panel on the roof before fixing anything. Move it around. Look at it from different angles. Open the roof vent if you have one. Think about where shadows will fall.

Small shadows can reduce solar output more than beginners expect. A panel that looks perfectly placed in the morning might be partly shaded by a roof vent later in the day.

Amanda’s practical note here: do not only plan for the panel. Plan for the van you might have after a year of travelling. Roof boxes, vents and “small upgrades” have a habit of appearing later.

Step 2: Decide how you will mount the solar panel

There are several ways to mount a solar panel on a campervan roof. The right method depends on your panel type, roof shape and how permanent you want the installation to be.

For many beginner builds, a rigid panel mounted on brackets or roof bars is a sensible choice. It gives the panel some airflow underneath and makes the installation easier to inspect later.

Flexible panels can be useful, but they need careful installation. If they are bonded directly to the roof, heat can become more of an issue, and removing them later can be annoying.

Step 3: Gather the tools and parts before you start

You think you have everything. Then you realise you are missing a connector, the cable gland, the correct fuse holder or the right size cable. Suddenly the “small afternoon job” becomes two weekends and three extra orders.

We learned this the annoying way with campervan electrics. It is not only the panel or battery that costs money. The small parts add up quickly.

If we were building on a budget today, we would not try to save money by skipping fuses, cable protection or proper waterproofing. Those are not luxury items. They are the parts that help the system survive real travel.

Step 4: Clean and prepare the roof

Whether you are drilling, bonding or using roof bars, the roof needs to be clean. Dirt, wax, old sealant, polish and road grime can all reduce how well adhesives or sealants work. Even if you are using mechanical fixings, a clean roof makes it easier to mark, seal and inspect the installation. This is a boring step. It is also one of the most important.

A solar panel installation is not only about electricity. It is also about keeping water outside the van. And water is very good at finding small mistakes.


A basic preparation process usually looks like this:
  • Do not rush curing time.
  • Wash the roof properly.
  • Dry the area.
  • Mark the panel position.
  • Clean the bonding or sealing areas with a suitable cleaner.
  • Follow the adhesive or sealant manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 5: Mount the solar panel

Now it is time to fix the panel to the roof. The exact process depends on your mounting system, so always follow the instructions for your brackets, rails, adhesive and panel. But the general idea is the same: the panel must be secure, supported and positioned so it will not move while driving.

For a rigid panel, you will usually:
  1. Attach brackets to the panel frame.
  2. Place the panel in its final roof position.
  3. Mark mounting points.
  4. Prepare the roof surface.
  5. Bond, screw or bolt the brackets depending on your method.

  7. Let adhesive or sealant cure properly before driving.
  8. Check that the panel cannot move.

Do not rely on “it feels solid” only. Think about wind, vibration, emergency braking and years of driving. CamperPals rule of thumb: If it can vibrate loose, assume it eventually will.

That does not mean you need to overbuild everything like a bridge. It means the panel should be mounted with real road use in mind.

Step 6: Route the solar cables into the van

Most fixed solar panels need cables to enter the van through the roof. The usual solution is a waterproof cable entry gland. This is a small roof-mounted box or fitting that lets the cables pass through while helping keep water out.

Before drilling a cable hole, check both sides of the roof. From above, the position may look perfect. From inside, it might land behind a beam, inside a cabinet you cannot access, or in the wrong part of the ceiling.

Do not leave cables rubbing against sharp metal. A campervan moves, and cable insulation can wear over time.


Before making the hole, ask:
  • Where will the cable enter inside the van?
  • Can I reach it later?
  • Is it close to the charge controller?
  • Will it interfere with insulation, cladding or cabinets?
  • Can I route the cable safely?
  • Is the hole away from roof ribs or structural parts?

  • Mark the cable entry location.
  • Check inside and outside before drilling.
  • Drill the hole carefully.
  • Protect sharp metal edges.
  • Feed the cable through.

Step 7: Install the solar charge controller

The solar charge controller sits between the solar panel and the leisure battery.

Its job is to control the charging so the battery is charged properly.

For most campervans, we recommend an MPPT charge controller if the budget allows it. PWM controllers can work in smaller budget systems, but MPPT is usually the better choice for getting more useful charging, especially in mixed weather.


Step 8: Connect the system in the correct order

The correct connection order can depend on the charge controller, so always check the manual for your specific controller. In many systems, the general principle is:

  1. Connect the charge controller to the battery first.
  2. Then connect the solar panel to the charge controller.
  3. Check that the controller recognises the battery and begins charging correctly.

The reason is simple: many controllers need to detect the battery voltage before receiving power from the solar panel. Do not guess here, take your time and read the manual.

Also, do not connect or disconnect MC4 solar connectors under load unless the manufacturer says it is safe to do so. Solar panels can produce voltage whenever they are exposed to light. A practical trick is to cover the panel or work when light levels are low, but still follow the product instructions.

Step 9: Add fuses and protect the cables

Fuses are there to protect the cable and system if something goes wrong. Where fuses are needed depends on the system design, cable lengths and components, but many campervan solar setups need fuse protection between the charge controller and battery. Larger or more complex systems may need additional protection.

This is one of the parts where we do not recommend copying a random diagram from the internet without understanding it. Jacob’s technical note: the fuse should protect the cable, not just the device. A large fuse on a small cable is not a safety upgrade. It is a problem wearing a plastic cover.

  • Fuse size guidance from component manufacturers
  • Charge controller manual
  • Solar panel specifications
  • Battery recommendations
  • Cable current rating

Step 10: Test the solar installation

Before closing panels, hiding cables or going on a trip, test the system. Use the charge controller display or app if it has one. A multimeter is also useful for basic checks.

1. Installing the panel where it gets shaded

A roof vent, rack or storage box can create more shading than you expect. Before fixing the panel, think about the full roof layout. Solar output is not only about panel size. Placement matters.

2. Forgetting waterproofing

A solar panel that charges well but leaks into the van is not a success. Take your time with cable entry, screw holes and sealant. Water damage is much more annoying than spending an extra hour on roof prep.


3. Hiding the charge controller forever

It is tempting to make everything invisible. It looks cleanx, but if you cannot reach the controller when needed, check the lights, reset settings or inspect cables later, you have made the system harder to live with.

Clean is good, but impossible to access is not.

4. Using random cable sizes

  5. Keep the charge controller accessible.
  6. Buy more cable and small parts than we first thought.
