Choose materials based on weight, moisture resistance, and ease of installation. Popular choices include XPS/foam boards, PIR, and wool. XPS offers good moisture protection and needs less thickness; wool breathes and helps regulate condensation. For Nordic-like climates, 20–40 mm XPS/PIR in walls and 30–50 mm in the roof usually works well. Add an air gap behind panels for better moisture control.
Start by planning your energy budget (all appliances × hours = daily Wh). Choose suitable batteries (AGM or LiFePo₄ depending on weight and budget), use correct cable sizes for 12 V systems (measure round-trip length), and fit fuses close to the battery. Add a shunt or battery monitor for control and ensure inverter and chargers have enough ventilation.
Build with expansion in mind: leave spare cable runs, oversize your fuse box slightly, use modular DC distribution blocks and a central data hub (CAN or Victron Smart) so you can later add solar, more battery capacity, or a larger inverter without rewiring.
Attach cabinets to structural framing or through the floor/vehicle frame rather than just thin wall panels. Use panel materials strong enough to hold screws and resist vibration; a thin plywood backing behind decorative panels improves fixing strength and long-term durability.

Combine a roof vent with an extractor fan for active airflow, and position vents or windows for cross-breeze. Proper insulation, vapour control layers and a ventilated air gap behind panels help manage humidity and prevent condensation while cooking or sleeping.
Use layered sealing: rust protection, flexible sealant, and an exterior trim or cap strip. Combine with mechanical barriers such as edge trims or flashing. Include hidden ventilation channels behind panels for dry-air circulation and easy inspection without dismantling the walls.
