It mattered, sure, but it didn’t make or break the project. It’s easy to get stuck fine-tuning when the real goal is to get on the road and enjoy the journey.

Choose materials based on weight, moisture resistance, and ease of installation. Popular choices include XPS/foam boards, PIR, and wool. XPS offers good moisture protection and needs less thickness; wool breathes and helps regulate condensation. For Nordic-like climates, 20–40 mm XPS/PIR in walls and 30–50 mm in the roof usually works well. Add an air gap behind panels for better moisture control.
Start by planning your energy budget (all appliances × hours = daily Wh). Choose suitable batteries (AGM or LiFePo₄ depending on weight and budget), use correct cable sizes for 12 V systems (measure round-trip length), and fit fuses close to the battery. Add a shunt or battery monitor for control and ensure inverter and chargers have enough ventilation.
Build with expansion in mind: leave spare cable runs, oversize your fuse box slightly, use modular DC distribution blocks and a central data hub (CAN or Victron Smart) so you can later add solar, more battery capacity, or a larger inverter without rewiring.
Attach cabinets to structural framing or through the floor/vehicle frame rather than just thin wall panels. Use panel materials strong enough to hold screws and resist vibration; a thin plywood backing behind decorative panels improves fixing strength and long-term durability.
Use sandwich constructions. A thin plywood or frames with lightweight cores (like XPS or honeycomb panels). Keep heavy items low and close to the vehicle’s chassis to maintain centre of gravity. Build in modular sections for easy maintenance and future adjustments.
Vinyl is ideal against moisture and easy to clean; laminate gives a stylish look and good durability but needs insulation or levelling beneath; plywood is great as a sub-floor for fixing furniture. Install flooring last or ensure fixings allow for slight movement to prevent buckling.
Pre-drill corners, use masking tape for clean cuts, remove burrs and metal shavings, treat edges with rust protection, and seal with a flexible marine-grade sealant. Measure carefully and follow sealing instructions to prevent future leaks.
Combine a roof vent with an extractor fan for active airflow, and position vents or windows for cross-breeze. Proper insulation, vapour control layers and a ventilated air gap behind panels help manage humidity and prevent condensation while cooking or sleeping.
Use layered sealing: rust protection, flexible sealant, and an exterior trim or cap strip. Combine with mechanical barriers such as edge trims or flashing. Include hidden ventilation channels behind panels for dry-air circulation and easy inspection without dismantling the walls.
