What is vanlife?
Vanlife is a lifestyle where you travel and live in a van that’s been converted into a campervan, full-time or part-time. There’s no single “right” way to do it. For some, it’s simple weekend trips and minimal gear. For others, it’s remote work, long journeys and a home that moves with you.
Most builds share the same fundamentals: a place to sleep, proper ventilation, smart storage and a way to cook. Some keep it minimalist with a basic battery setup and a portable stove. Others go further with a fridge, sink, shower, toilet and an electrical system built for everyday comfort.

Vanlife in practice: What you actually need to figure out
Power & charging (without the headache)
You don’t need to be an electrician, but you do need a plan. Ask yourself: are you charging phones and lights only, or do you want to work from the van with a laptop, fridge and maybe an inverter? Once you know that, choosing batteries, solar and charging becomes much easier.
Water, toilet & hygiene (simple levels that work)
- Basic: water jugs + simple wash setup
- Mid-level: fixed tank + sink
- Comfort: hot water, shower/toilet, requires more planning and maintenance
Ventilation & condensation (the unglamorous truth)
Condensation is vanlife’s hidden boss level, especially in colder climates and shoulder seasons. Good ventilation and sensible insulation make a huge difference.
Overnight spots & safety
Vanlife is more enjoyable when you sleep well. Good habits (lighting, locks, positioning, intuition) and a few safety basics go a long way.

How much does vanlife cost?
Vanlife costs vary widely depending on whether you build DIY or buy a finished van, what vehicle you choose and your comfort level. Some people start on a small budget with a simple weekend setup, while others invest heavily for a “tiny home” feel.
A helpful way to budget is to split it into:
- The van itself (mileage, service history and condition first)
- The conversion (the features that enable travel and comfort)

Why we chose vanlife
For us, vanlife started as a thought in our early 30s: we had jobs and a home – but life easily turned into a loop of routine and short (often expensive) holidays. We wanted more adventure without waiting for “someday”.
What began as a one-year plan became two… three… and eventually several years. We’ve built and lived in different vans, learned what actually holds up long-term, and what looks great but becomes annoying after week two.
That’s what CamperPals is built on: practical guides and honest tips from real experience.

FAQ: Common Vanlife Questions
Answer: Travelling and/or living in a converted campervan full-time or part-time, in your own way.
Answer: The one that matches your needs and budget. Focus on practicality: standing height, space, service history, running costs and maintainability.
Answer: Start with official campsites and designated motorhome stopovers, then use trusted vanlife apps to check reviews, rules and recent comments. Arrive before dark when possible, trust your instincts, keep a low profile, and always have a backup spot nearby in case the first option doesn’t feel right.
Answer: Absolutely, we have done it several times instead of sleeping in a tent. No more struggling with wet tents and leaking air mattresses. A campervan gives you a real bed, but above all a functioning kitchen and the ability to cool your drinks!
Answer: Start with your needs: how you want to travel, for how long, in which climate and with what budget. Then prioritise the essentials (bed, ventilation, basic power).
Answer: Ventilation, sensible insulation and daily habits (airing out, drying moisture) are key, especially in colder seasons.
